New Years Resolutions are a waste of time!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but for a lot of people, they are wasting their time making New Years resolutions! In the moment, often with alcoholic encouragement, filled with hope of a better year, people make their resolutions of what they will do in the New Year.

How many people actually follow through with their New Years resolutions? Some certainly do, but at a guess I would say most people never follow through to completion. They may start off with good intentions, but many will convince themselves of reasons why they can’t complete their resolution(s). More often than not, they convince themselves that they are simply too busy!

How many business owners talk about the things they plan to do with their business, but never actually do it? Much like uncompleted New Year’s resolutions, they find excuses why it hasn’t happened. Almost always the excuse is that they are just too busy dealing with the day to day, to follow through with their plans. There can be other excuses such as unexpected events have delayed them, but how real are all of these excuses?

People often feel comfort in being busy. They associate busy with being productive. Some people can become lost and unsure what to do when they have spare time, so they look to ensure they always remain busy to avoid the issue.

The reality is that being busy does NOT necessarily equal being productive, especially today with so many potential distractions. With our accessibility these days, it is hard not to become glued to your phone and feel the need to respond immediately to every email or call, even though many may be unimportant. How about those enticing articles or ads that pop up on your computer screen inviting you to click through for more information? We can soon fill the gaps with these type distractions and convince ourselves at the end of the day that we have been very productive.

Don’t think you are guilty of wasting time each day? Then take my Q2 programme to find out for yourself. It’s FREE and enlightening! Just click on the following link and input your details at the bottom of the page: https://msofmarketing.com/small-business-success/quadrant-2-programme/ . The course will then be emailed to you. It does not take long (in case you are worried you won’t have the time!)

As crazy as it is, many, many times I have seen business owners, know what they need to do; know it will benefit their business, yet still not do it, with the same old excuse – I am too busy! Here is the reality, we can ALL make ourselves too busy, or we can ALL find the time to do what needs done. We make a choice to either hide behind excuses, or front up, free up the time and get it done!

I have created a course to teach small business owners how to do email marketing. I have only one concern about why people won’t buy the course and that is that they will convince themselves that they are too busy. It is not an expensive course. It involves short, step by step videos to make it easy for business owners; but I know many won’t buy the course or will buy it and not complete it. They will convince themselves that they are too busy. This is an example of why so many business owners are not as successful as they could be. They don’t prioritise what is important and make the time to get it done!

Think I don’t know what I am talking about? While I am creating Making Sense of Marketing, I am also running another business. While others had a break during lockdown, I was getting up earlier than ever, busting my butt creating material for Marketing Sense of Marketing. At the time of writing this article, I have spent over 12 months building this new business and I have still not officially launched it.

Being totally honest, as much as I believe my output is high compared to most, I know that I still waste some time. I could still do better!

The clearer the vision that you can create of what you want to do with your freed up time, the easier it will be for you to create the time. You must also have the courage to try! Some people self-sabotage, never finding spare time, as subconsciously they are scared of failing with the project that they have in mind. Not having the time is an easy excuse!

As the old saying goes: “Where there is the will, there is a way”. Don’t waste your time making New Year’s resolutions, or setting goals for your business, if you don’t have the “WILL” to make it happen!
